Riverslea Crossing Ride 2026

Posted by TravellingStrom on April 4, 2026

So, why here? Well, years ago I had a Geocache I placed here, but it got washed away in one of our floods. There have been many through that area. If you can imagine a tree with roots. Turn it upside down. All the roots are now all over the place up above, that is our Fitzroy river system catchment area, a massive system. Then the trunk, which is now down below is Riverslea Crossing. Every single bit of water flows down through Riverslea, eventually. And when that water leaves there and arrives in Rockhampton, it is 3 days later. So, from the height of water there, we know approximately how high the flood in Rocky could be.

The actual crossing is a very small single lane deck, right at the bottom. The locals have to leave vehicles on both sides and use boats to get to them. Anyway, they did a major upgrade a few years back and I wanted to go see it and maybe replace my cache if possible. Fill up at extreme high cost and away.

I decided to do a test, it won’t be a typical result because it is Easter weekend and no workers on site. This construction near me is the beginning point of a city bypass route, over a new bridge and ends where I will be going past soon. I left the servo at 8.33am. Most of the bypass road will be elevated on pylons due to flood prone areas.

I am heading now out west on the Capricorn Highway and this is where the off ramps and on ramps are being constructed. The river is to right of picture unseen. The time is now 8.51. But, I got green lights all the way, no traffic. This bypass is supposed to save about 40 mins in normal traffic times.

Just a quick ride west to Gogango and head north, there is about 26km of dirt.

There are a few nice looking dams out here, shoulda brought me swag 😉

Then not long after I get to the river. The area on the sides of the road are totally different and I can see it is going to be real hard to replant a geocache. No turning room, nor stopping bays. What a pain. They raised the bridge height quite a lot, but left it single lane, must be cost versus useage I guess.

One day I will follow the road ahead and see where it goes. Today, I crossed and found single lane and no turn areas. I did see an old abandoned house though.

Right, job done. I took a few photos of the river, still way over the old deck down below. Then, silly me ran out of charge in the camera, I forgot to charge the battery, idiot!!!

In that photo above, my original cache location was at the base of one of those two trees. That is a paved parking area under there.

OK, no more photos, but I heading back towards town, turned south to Dululu and then east to Mt Morgan. Gentle ride and got home around lunchtime, the days goal achieved.
