Wednesday β DakarMotos, Buenos Aires, Argentina
Today I was going to do some touristy things, but first job was to get past the dragon lady down at the customs desk at the post office. Here she is, I am sure she is an ex KGB watcher, but this time she let me though and I got the stuff sent away π
Once that was done it was off to see the Obelisk, this is in the centre of the largest street in the world, Avenue 9th July, about 20 lanes wide plus nature strips, it takes a while to cross.
I checked out a travel shop to find out about air tickets to the US. I had checked online earlier this morning, but the cheapest I could find was $1600US one way, a bit of a shock! The travel dude found me the cheapest available which at $1000 was still too expensive and was a milk run with lots of plane changes, but still cheaper than the rest. Unfortunately, I could not book a ticket until I had a new credit card and I also needed to get some other stuff shipped back home, but I had a quote anyway π After a bit of lunch I decided to head back as it was steamy hot and hard to move, no wonder they have siesta here, while down in the subway I spotted some nicely painted tile walls.
Check out Grizzly Adams racing for a train, I bet that takes some looking after π
An old Ford which needs some cancer treatment and a nice mural of a soccer team in the bckground.
We had some new people arrive today, Maya(Dutch) and Andy(Brit) on an old Triumph with sidecar, they have been to a lot of places and mostly camp, they added another mushroom to the backyard.
This evening was a BBQ, or what they call an Asado, this is a different type of thing than I am used to. Here is the start and basic layout, there is a very fine wired mesh over the main area, BUT, to the right where Javier is there is a small area where they build the actual fire. Once again different in that the kindling, starter and lots of coal/coke is put on before it is lit, then it is allowed to burn down to small hot coals.
One thing that is similar to home, you donβt play with another manβs Asado, isnβt that right Ken, sprung m8!
Me doing my waiter impression, even if it is only Sprite π
Once the coals have been made, the meat is prepared by being salted, these are a special cut specifically for Asados, some pork belly with mainly the skin, to make crackling and a slab of beef plus some thick juicy sausages and some black pudding. The coals are carefully spread under the meat and must not flame up, it has to be slow cooked, this takes hours and you can get quite drunk waiting for food! π
Once the food was ready it was time to hoe in, and it tasted fine, but I think I will stick to an Aussie BBQ, at least you can eat before midnight π
Now, here was a surprise, another rider turned up this evening named Paul from Oz, he is riding a KLR and I had met him at the Horizons Unlimited meeting at Mitta Mitta, he is that chap in the centre in the photo above with white hair and here he is with his bike last February.
So, it was a pleasant evening with some fun people and of course it was a late one, in fact I am not sure I have had an early one here yet! π
