Day 423 – 4th February 2010

Thursday – DakarMotos, Buenos Aires, Argentina

I had a bit of time off today, so after the mornings effort of cleaning the panniers and frames and getting the bike back together again etc, in the mid afternoon I headed into town via the train and subway system for a special event which was to occur at 3.30pm at a place called Plaza de Mayo. What was being held here was a march by the Mothers of the Plaza del Mayo. The Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo (Spanish: Asociación Madres de Plaza de Mayo) is an association of Argentine mothers whose children “disappeared” during the Dirty War, the military dictatorship between 1976 and 1983. The plaza itself had nothing to do with it, it just happened to be where they held the first protest, in front of the palace.

There is more information here for those interested. I arrived with time to spare and wandered around, it seemed all relaxed and peaceful.

But at the appointed time, the half hour march around the spire started with quite a few of the original marchers still evident. A very sad part of history here with up to 30,000 people having been abducted and gone missing, although those numbers are not confirmed.

A sad occasion very similar to the building in Chile where people went missing, but there has been some success with identifying the missing children here, some who are still alive. After this little outing I had to rush back to the bunkhouse because the potential bike buyer was going to meet and discuss price. After a chat, we agreed on a price and shook hands, so that part was done, now we needed the links and bar mounts from the US and also the new Title to arrive so a transfer can be achieved. If the parts arrive first, we can do the sale with the ‘paperwork’ that we have here and do the border crossing 😉

The evening was the usual, a bit of internet, some reading and a few beers 🙂 Tomorrow I was planning on getting the bike washed as it was now back together and can be ridden, this will also prove whether the fuel tank screen was the culprit in the rough running of the bike, I am pretty confident it will be fixed. More tomorrow, maybe 🙂

    Yup, that little screen will cause the bike to shut off when fuel gets low. If you let it get worse than it is in the pic (I know that’s hard to believe, but it is possible) the bike will sputter and die with a full tank as well. I found out the hard way. Luckily I was able to limp home for repairs. The bike should run like new with the fresh filter. I can’t believe they don’t list it as a maintenance item in the manual.

    • Thanks for the confirmation, and the new owner will probably like that news as well.

      I guess it all depends on the fuel supply, I have been running some pretty bad stuff, if you had the same issue, where were you riding?
