RTW Day 2

Posted by TravellingStrom on August 2, 2008

Had a great sleep in, may have been something to do with the late night drinking rum. I felt better, I had bought some Codrol when I arrived in Sarina yesterday and they had helped my wog nicely. After a late breaky packed the bike and headed north. I had no plans except to be in Cairns at least by Sunday night, but that may change. I decided to head towards Townsville and see what happens.

Here are my hosts Shayne and Jenny and Rex the dog 🙂

As you can see from the map I covered a bit more territory than I expected. I started heading north around lunchtime and had a feed about an hour later at Proserpine, you can see the sugar mill in the background, sugar is a major crop up this way.

This is another mill, you can see the sugar cane in front of it still standing

So it was a a lazy day heading north, listening to music, sort of, my iPod was skipping and jumping, had no idea what was going on. Anyway, as it was getting late and I was still feeling the effects of the flu, I decided a motel in Townsville would be good, I could then relax and watch some Friday night footy 🙂

Wrong plan Stan!! No accomodation, WTF! I drove through the whole town, everywhere just on dusk and all I saw was NO Vacancies. OK, well, there were some smaller towns a bit further north, off I trecked, dark now and getting colder as well. To cut a long story short, I eventually managed to find a hotel room in Ingham after asking around a few booked out motels. It turns out Townsville had a Mormon convention!!

The people at the Lee hotel were kind, let me park my bike in their lockup carport 🙂 So, finally at 7.30pm I was sitting in a bar watching footy and relaxing. I spoke to Des in Cairns, he said if I arrived Saturday I could go on the Ulysses ride on Sunday, so I decided to do that, it was only a few hours away.

Anyway, had a late night again 🙂
